Traveling during COVID19

I am traveling during COVID19.  I’ve just booked 2 trips for the Summer.  That is in addition to my postpone trip to Acapulco, Mexico.  The new trips are to San Juan, Puerto Rico the first week of June.  Then to Cancun, Mexico over the 4th of July.  Some of my friends are concerned, but personally I am not.  I have good travel habits.  For over 25 years we have traveled with hand sanitizer, bleach wipes and spray disinfectant.  Plus, we have carefully reviewed the CDC guidelines on “Prevent getting sick”.  That was when I realized I heard all this before?

Traveling during COVID19

From the CDC Website….

On the website of the CDC “Prevent getting sick page it spells out the guidelines below.

CDC says: Protect yourself and others

  • Wash your hands
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
  • Avoid Close Contact
  • Avoid Crowds
  • Clean and disinfect
  • Wear a Mask
  • Wear Gloves

All great rules to follow but I kept thinking.  I have heard this all before.  Knowing that I did not live through a pandemic before.  I racked my brain to recall where I had heard this?  Could it have been in a book or movie?  What about a history class and then Sunday morning I was making Mother’s Day Breakfast for my Wife.

Big Mama’s Shrimp & Grits

I made her Big Mama’s Shrimp and Grits.  Big Mama, my mother’s mother.  My grandmother taught me everything I needed to know about traveling during COVID19 when I was a little boy!

Things Big Mama said….

Big Mama said:

  • Wash your hands good!
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze (Use the handkerchiefs I bought you)
  • Don’t be too close to people (Separate!)
  • You don’t need to be in all those public places (all the time)
  • Clean up them germs. (Make sure you clean thoroughly and properly)
  • Don’t touch your face, and Don’t let anyone touch your face.  Don’t touch anyone else’s face!
Big Mama

If you stay ready you don’t have to get ready!

I have been preparing for this my whole life!  These are the things we do on a daily basis.  It is not about traveling during COVID19 it is about being clean and sanitary.  Big Mama taught us to clean with bleach, ammonia, and vinegar.  When we grew up you took a bath in the morning and one before you went to bed.  Something that seems to have gotten lost.  We wiped public chairs down before you sat in them.  You wiped tables down before you put the food on them.

My Wife and I still do those things to this day.  When we travel to resorts we have covers that we put on longers.  So that we never come in direct contact with loungers at a resort or cruise ship.  We wash our hands constantly throughout the day.  Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.  We don’t stand close to people not even in a line.  Hell, we don’t let people stand close to us.  Which is a constant battle with some Foreigners.

Wisdom is passed down from our Elders!

My point to this is none of this should really be new.  My wife and I have traveled for 30 years together without becoming sick.  We have achieved that by following the training of our Grandparents and the grace of God!  The CDC is not telling us anything new.  Okay, maybe the mask but the primary purpose for the mask is actually to prevent you from spreading Corona Virus.  The secondary reason for the mask is so you won’t touch your face.  Big Mama covered that.  By the time I was 3 years old, I stopped touching my face.  Consequently, I never had acne problems as a teen either!  We can’t stop living.  For me, not traveling, is to stop living.

I am traveling during COVID19.  I have 3 trips for the Summer.  The first is San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Second, is Acapulco, Mexico.  Followed by Cancun, Mexico over the 4th of July.  I personally am not worried.  Some of my friends are concerned.  We have good travel habits that we learn from our grandparents. Which are almost identical to the CDC guidelines.  When all else fails we have a Father, who art in heaven!
