Day 1 Cuba – 1/7
Day 1 Cuba, we had breakfast at the apartment. We brought food from the States to make our own breakfast. I like breakfast. I only eat hot breakfast. It is important to me to have a good breakfast. I don’t like spending a lot of time in the morning trying to find a place to eat that is good and priced correctly. Therefore for me, it makes sense when I have a place to cook to make my own breakfast and spend the extra money on lunch and/or dinner! That being said we had pancakes, bacon, and eggs. Let me explain further so this makes sense. I am sure some of you are wondering how on earth did they bring these items into a Foreign Country and get through Customs?
We brought pancake mix that you only needed to add water. You can’t drink the water in Cuba, so bottled water was used. The bacon was already cooked. The bacon was purchased already cooked and in a sealed container. The eggs we brought are real eggs; the kind used to make omelets. The eggs were whole eggs frozen with citric acid. They are in what looks like a milk carton. We packed all of these items in the cooler. The cooler was checked at the airport. We had no problems and we have done this many times in the Bahamas. Also in the cooler, we pack margarine. In our luggage, we pack the cooking spray along with the syrup. This allows us to make breakfast for 2 for a week for around $12 USD.
After breakfast, our first stop is the liquor store. Don’t judge me! It was the fastest place to pick up bottled water and some additional wine. We did bring boxed wine from the US. Next, we did some light shopping around the area. Really it was just so we could check the prices of goods. This helps us to establish a baseline and allows us to look all week for better pricing. We walked around 7 blocks to the Malecon to take pictures. From the Malecon, you could see the lighthouse and the fort in downtown Havana.
The Cuban Capitol
From there we took a Classic American Car taxi to El Capitolio, Academia de Ciencias de Cuba. The Cuban Capitol and took pictures. The Capitol is undergoing renovations. Therefore, there is a lot of construction. Surrounding the Capitol are several interesting buildings, museums, restaurants, hotels and bars. On the weekends there are also straw and art markets where many of the local sell their work. We took a ride in another Classic American Automobile this time it was a beautiful convertible.
Lunch in Cuba
We road, with the top down to a well-known Cuban Restaurant for lunch. There I had salad, rice, potato chips and grilled Lobster. Nikki had Seafood Risotto. We took a Bike cab back to the Capitol to take more pics. The temperature was in the high 80s. The sun had taken its toll on us. We took a taxi back to our Airbnb. We had intentions of going out and experiencing the night life, but like I said the sun had taken its toll on us and thus we retired for the evening and will start out fresh in the morning.
Be sure to read tomorrow’s entry and see what happened on day 2.
