About Bimini

Bimini is 45 miles from Miami. It is the closest Bahamian island to the US. Bimini is known as “The Friendly” island, because of it’s unique charm.  The locals are inviting and very helpful.  North Bimini is about seven miles long and 700 feet wide. The main settlement is Alice Town and the largest resort there is Resorts World Bimini.  “The King’s Highway” is the major road and has a collection of shops, restaurants, and bars on it.   The other main road is called “Queens Highway” and runs almost the length of the island parallel to Kings Highway.  Rum-runners used to store their stash on the nearby shores.

Bimini Bay Beach

The Beaches in Bimini are some of the most beautiful Beaches that exist.  The sugar white sand is amazing and the clear pure water that allows you to see down to your feet while standing in 4 to 5 feet of water is beautifully refreshing.  The turquoise blue and the tempter will take control of your mind and body making you believe you don’t want to leave.  One of the fun things to do is rent a golf cart.  On Bimini they use golf carts like cars.  The Island is small enough that you can use a Golf Cart to drive all around the island.  From one end to the other you can drive.  There are probably more golf carts then cars on Bimini.  Parking is never a problem and even teenagers can drive.

This legendary Island has some great history.  Ernest Hemingway lived on Bimini from 1935 to 1937.  He wrote articles and worked on his book, “To Have and Have Not” and “Islands In The Stream” there.  Singer Jimmy Buffett spent some time on South Bimini while writing one of his books, “Citation Needed”.  Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech while on the island during 1964.  Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., who was expelled from the U.S. House of Representatives lived there.  He resided on the island of Bimini from January 1967 to April 1969.  The United States Supreme Court ruled that the House had acted unconstitutionally when it excluded Powell, a duly elected member in 1972.

It has been tough to get to the Bimini since the Resorts World Bimini Fast Ferry stopped sailing Aug 2015.  That left 3 options to get to the Island from the U.S.  Silvers Airline currently operates flights to Bimini.  Resorts World Bimini owns a Private Sea Plane.  The other option was private boat. Once you get to Bimini there are lots of options.

If you are planning to go, things you should know:
