Blacks Folks Need Suncreen Too: Sunscreen Oil A Game Changer

If you like the beach or spend time outside for travel, work or play.  Then you need sunscreen.

My new favorite sunscreen is Sublime Sun 50+ by L’Oreal.  My Family has been using it for about 2 years now.  We like it because it is oil instead of paste.  Sublime Sun has a good smell and because it is oil based, it is absorbed into your skin making your skin feel soft after using.  This Sunscreen holds up well, even in Salt Water.  Also this Sunscreen does not give you that white pasty look.  The one that makes Black People look ashy.  Sunscreen is important because spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.

It has become a misconception that African Americans do not need to use sunscreen. Many believe that African-American skin has melanin which provides adequate protection.  This is only partially true, according to Dr. Marshelya D. Wilson, MD, a Black Female Family Medicine Doctor.  “Melanin does provide protection but only minimally, about an SPF 15. Ultraviolet (UV) rays still have the potential to damage skin and lead to often-undiagnosed skin cancers.  African Americans do need to protect their skin with sunscreen, at least SPF 30,” She (Dr. Wilson) told Skincare.com.

Sunscreen products are regulated as over-the-counter drugs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has several safety and effectiveness regulations in place that govern the manufacture and marketing of all sunscreen products, including safety data on its ingredients.  Sunscreen use can help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender or race.  In fact, it is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

To decrease this risk, regularly use a sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF value 15 or higher and other sun protection measures including: limited time in the sun, especially from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses.  L’Oreal’s Sublime Sun sunscreen provides SPF protection from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays while resupplying your body with vitally important nutrients.  One advantages of Sublime is it is a clear oil spray is infused with nourishing oils, that block ultraviolet (UV) rays.  The Sublime sunscreen contains a blend of vitamin E, shea butter oil, argan oil, grapeseed and sunflower oil.  All designed to provide you with a soft smooth skin.

According to L’Oreal you should spray generously and spread evenly by hand 15 minutes before sun exposure.  It is best applied by holding the container 4 to 6 inches from the skin to apply. You should never spray directly onto your face. L’Oreal recommends spraying on hands then apply to face. You should not apply in windy conditions. The product should be use in well-ventilated area. You should reapply every 2 hours or after swimming, towel drying and excessive sweating.

It is recommended that you use enough sunscreen to generously coat all skin that will be not be covered by clothing. Ask yourself, “Will my face, ears, arms or hands be covered by clothing?”   If not, apply sunscreen. Most people do not apply the recommended amount of sunscreen.  The guideline of “1 ounce, enough to fill a shot glass,” is what dermatologists consider the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body.  Let’s keep it real people.  Adjust the amount of sunscreen applied depending on your body size. If you are larger you need more.   Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes BEFORE going outdoors.  Don’t forget about your lips.  Skin cancer can also attack your lips.  Apply a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, to protect your lips.

Please do not forget to reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating, according to the directions on the bottle. Other helpful advice includes never spray sunscreen around or near the face or mouth. Instead spraying an adequate amounts of the sunscreen into your hands and then applying to your face.  You want to avoid the fumes while also ensuring proper coverage. This also applies when using a spray sunscreens on children, be aware of the direction of the wind to avoid inhalation.
